CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF PLATAFRICA IN STYLE
The winners of the 19th annual PlatAfrica 2018 jewellery design competition were announced on Wednesday during a theatre production style award ceremony hosted by Anglo-American at the Theatre on the Track in Kyalami.
Every year, professional and student jewellers take part in PlatAfrica where they are supplied with piece of platinum and challenged to a single task – to create something beautiful.
“What we’ve been doing for 19 years is encourage both professional jewellers and local students and apprentices to work with platinum,” says CEO of Anglo-American Chris Griffith. This year’s theme was “Blessings of Love” which aimed to celebrate women empowerment by emphasising the rarity and strength of platinum. And in the midst of Joburg Fashion week, the gala event on Wednesday was nothing short of a celebration of women. With a state-of-the-art fashion show that showcased the finalists’ jewellery and a showstopping musical theatre production, it was a night to remember. Among the corporate representatives of mining conglomerates and the 2018 finalists, a few influencers were also turning heads on the red-carpet.
Social-media influencer and cultural ambassador Kwena Baloyi says that the craftmanship of the jewellery pieces blew her away this year. “The pieces are timeless which is so important when it comes to style and fashion,” Kwena, who attended the awards for a second time, says.
Like Kwena, it wasn’t some of the finalists’ first time at the awards either. Jefta Mtole, who came second in the professional category, enjoyed his third PlatAfrica this year. Mtole took part in the competition as a student in 2015 and 2016 and says he feels like his first win in the professional category is the start of big things to come. “I believe that with the support we have from Anglo Plat we are going to bring something new to the platinum world,” he says.
The winners of the competition will be traveling to India as part of Anglo-American Platinum and PGI India’s collaboration to participate in PGI India’s design outsourcing process for the Evara Platinum brand.
